Empowering Adults to be Watchful for the Eye Health Needs of Children Around Them

MyEyesMyLife (MEML) is set up with the primary mission to remind teachers and educators of the vital role they play in being the first point of surveillance for undiagnosed pediatric myopia at school

Therefore, MEML’s mission is to launch pediatric myopia teacher-awareness campaigns at N-5 elementary schools

Starting in New York City where MEML is founded, we aim to develop a list of ophthalmologists and optometrists who have agreed to treat small children who have no health insurance, pro bono

In the Summer of 2024 MEML polled parents in an affluent New York City playground, and:

Only 30% could describe meaning of the word myopia
20% had never heard of the word myopia before
30% got nearsighted and farsighted confused
Yet >90% said they knew the words “influenza/flu”, COVID

This random survey indicates that eye health is not central to parents’ understanding of pediatric risk-factors; MEML aims to fix this through this website MEML’s mission to teach parents and caregivers simple eye-health hacks for their children
